Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to process confidential documents on PDFortis?

Yes. Your documents are processed inside your browser and are never sent to our servers. The only exception is the translation tool, which asks for your permission before sending text to an external service.

How does the Personal Data Detector find sensitive information?

It reads the text of every page in your browser and looks for patterns: email addresses, phone numbers, card numbers (checking that they are valid), IBANs and ID numbers from several countries. It suggests blocks and you decide what to redact.

What are Bates numbering and folio numbering for?

Both number pages consecutively so they can be cited in legal proceedings. Bates numbering uses a code with a prefix (ABC000001) and can continue across several files; folio numbering adds a box with the office and case number.

How does a SHA-256 certificate prove a PDF's integrity?

SHA-256 produces a unique 64-character fingerprint of the file. If anyone changes a single comma, the fingerprint changes completely. It proves the file wasn't modified, but it doesn't identify who signed it: that requires a certified digital signature.

Is there a file size limit?

We don't impose limits, but processing uses your device's memory: documents with hundreds of pages may be slow on phones or computers with little RAM.
